If you read nutrition books and can’t make head nor tails of what’s really important, I’m sympathetic. But I recently read a statistic that floored me, even though I know a fair amount regarding nutrition and health.
The source of my statistic is Michael Pollan’s book, “In Defense of Food”. In his research he found that humans, over thousands of years, have consumed over 80,000 different species of plants and animals (fungi also). Out of this large number about 3,000 have been very common in the human diet.
If you had to guess what percentage of those 3,000 food species we have in our diets today, what would be the number? Let’s restrict the diets to western cultures ( Canada, US, etc). 10%,.. 5%,.. 1%..? Well one indication is that 67% of caloric intake in the western diet is from 3 foods! What are they? WHEAT, CORN, & SOY.
You could be scratching your scalp about what is the right percentage. How do people determine the right percentage? You are not going to find the answer in Reader’s Digest or Gourmet magazine. Research into good nutrition is based on the diets of our ancestors over tens of thousands of years. It is known that our evolved digestive systems successfully process between 1% and 5% of our caloric intake from corn, soy, and wheat.
You are smart enough to get the message: reduce the amount (percentage) of soy, corn, and wheat products in your diet. Stop believing the food industry myth.
You know a good recommendation when you read it. The first major benefit from adopting a reduced intake of these three foods is weight loss. The second, and equally important is the absence of related allergies
If you feel like you have been taken for a ride, well now is the time to get off the “fat train”. Yes, let the corn, wheat, and soy products and their derivatives head on down the line without you. The food industry is counting on you for billions of dollars, but let them find another sucker. Your good health is coming first!
There are many foods that will be leaving your diet. First, you omit any foods that contain high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), soy protein, hydrogenated oils, refined wheat flour, wheat starch, maltodextrin, and soybean oil. You may also want to omit food additives that contain mono and diglycerides. Stop damaging your digestive system.
There are more common daily foods which you will want to exclude from your new diet. Soda or other sweetened drinks (contain lots of HFCS) are no-no’s. There are lots of calories from the corn derivative. Those delicious salad dressings and marinades and sauces will have to go if you want to lose your big belly. Those baked goods, (breads, cookies, muffins, pies, etc) contain too much corn, wheat, or soy products got a healthful diet.
Eating processed food has become a habit and way of life in our culture. We think nothing of eating processed foods that are fried in soybean or corn oil. Those snacks like chips, cookies, candies, taco and burrito wraps taste so good, also habit forming, have a stressful effect on your digestive system. They are unhealthy!
On top of that, think about how much breads, cereals, pastas, muffins, and other highly processed wheat products that most people consume each day. Again, this is LOADS of unhealthy, blood-sugar spiking,nutrient-poor calories, that more than half of the population has some degree of intolerance to anyway.
We are just human and of course we give in and sometimes eat cookies, pasta, and even corn chips when dining out. Instead of eliminating these foods, consider these foods as your “cheat meals” and try to do this no more than once per week. You must eliminate sodas and deep fried foods though…they are just TOO devastating to your well being!
